A BILL to amend article six, chapter twenty-four of the code of West Virginia, one thousand nine hundred thirty-one, as amended, by adding thereto a new section, designated section six-c, relating to the local emergency telephone system; and providing that addressing standards for municipalities and counties are the exclusive authority of the municipalities and counties.

Be it enacted by the Legislature of West Virginia:
That article six, chapter twenty-four of the code of West Virginia, one thousand nine hundred thirty-one, as amended, be amended by adding thereto a new section, designated section six-c, to read as follows:
ARTICLE 6. LOCAL EMERGENCY TELEPHONE SYSTEM.
§24-6-6c. Municipal or county addressing standards.

Municipalities and counties have the exclusive authority to adopt and standardize an addressing system within their respective jurisdictions. It is recommended, however, that municipalities and counties work in consultation with dispatchers and emergency service providers to establish a single addressing system that is adopted for all addressing purposes, including emergency service provision, postal delivery, municipal or county record keeping and utility service orders.

NOTE: The purpose of this bill is to provide that municipalities and counties have the exclusive authority to adopt and standardize addressing systems to be used in connection with the local emergency telephone system.

This section is new; therefore, strike-throughs and underscoring have been omitted.
